The City of Ryde is hosting a Nowruz ceremony on Friday 20 March at the Top Ryde City Shopping Centre Piazza, acknowledging the arrival of the Persian new year.
Running from 7.00-8.30pm, the evening will feature cultural performances, live music, face painting and a traditional Haft-Sin display as Council recognises this important occasion and the rich heritage it represents.
Nowruz, meaning "new day," is a traditional festival marking the beginning of spring and the Persian New Year, celebrated by over 300 million people worldwide. With over 3,000 years of history, it symbolises hope, prosperity, and new beginnings.
City of Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown said the Nowruz ceremony is a wonderful reminder of Council's ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity.
"We are proud to recognise the contributions of the Iranian, Afghan, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Tajik, Uzbek, Kazakh, Turkmen, and other Nowruz-celebrating communities that enrich our City," he said.
"The City of Ryde is home to people from many different backgrounds, and it is our shared traditions that strengthen the bonds of our community.
"We remain dedicated to fostering inclusivity and acknowledging cultural traditions like Nowruz in the City of Ryde, which we recognise alongside other vibrant community events like Diwali and Lunar New Year."
Mayor Brown said this year's Nowruz gathering is both a celebration of renewal and a moment to reflect on events occurring overseas.
"As we enjoy the performances, the traditional displays, and the spirit of Nowruz, we will also take some time to share a moment of community solidarity as we wrap our arms around those who may be grieving or worrying for loved ones overseas during what has been a difficult and volatile time," he said.
"We come together not only to honour Persian culture, but to support each other as a community."
