Civil Aviation Streamlines Approach to Emerging Tech

To help have a consistent approach to how we regulate emerging technologies in all areas of aviation, we've combined the following publications:

  • the Emerging technologies program digital document
  • Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Strategic Regulatory Roadmap (RPAS-AAM Roadmap).

The new document keeps the original title of 'Emerging technologies program'.

Emerging Technologies Program

The Emerging Technologies Program digital document facilitates the safe and timely integration of emerging aviation technologies and systems into Australia's airspace and civil aviation regulatory framework. This document builds upon several years of groundwork that helps align industry and community expectations regarding the secure deployment of cutting-edge technologies.

In 2022, we established the Future Strategies Taskforce to provide a strategic overview of major activities necessary for appropriate and timely regulatory responses to emerging aviation technologies expected to deploy in the next 3 to 10 years. The taskforce identified key challenges, including future workforce management, policy development, legislative actions, and implementation activities.

Merging with the RPAS-AAM Roadmap

At the same time, the RPAS-AAM Roadmap, collaboratively developed with industry input, focused on providing clarity regarding Australia's future approach to aviation safety regulation and oversight for RPAS and AAM. This roadmap aligns with industry ambitions and sets the stage for a comprehensive regulatory framework.

Emerging Technologies and Regulatory Change branch

The culmination of these efforts was the creation of our new unified Emerging Technologies and Regulatory Change branch at the beginning of 2023. This branch will oversee preparation work for the deployment of emerging aviation technologies and coordinate related activities. This includes the development of the latest Emerging Technologies Program. Detailed business planning is underway to prioritise and allocate resources effectively, ensuring timely regulatory responses for the safe deployment of these technologies.

Australia remains committed to collaborative efforts with the industry, fostering an evolving approach to emerging aviation technologies and systems and making sure it meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
