Closure of Operation North Frogmouth

Police have charged 101 people with 237 offences following the closure of a major operation targeting drug trafficking in the Mackay region, Queensland Police say.

Operation North Frogmouth commenced on March 4, 2015 and involved detectives from the Drug and Serious Crime Group, State Crime Command with the assistance of officers from Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch. The Crime and Corruption Commission also assisted with the holding of multiple brackets of hearings in Mackay and Brisbane throughout 2016 and 2017.

Investigators targeted drug trafficking networks with links to the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast as well as the supply of firearms in the Mackay area.

During the operation detectives located quantities of methylamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, cannabis, steroids and weapons.

The operation closed on February 10, 2017 with a total of 101 people charged with 237 offences including 39 people who were charged with drug trafficking. The majority of those charged were from the Mackay region.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Slater from the Drug and Serious Crime Group said the investigation demonstrated many levels of the Queensland Police Service working together to disrupt and disable criminal networks.

"These protracted and tactical investigations show our determination to stop criminal activities which adversely impact the community," Detective Acting Superintendent Slater said.

Detective Inspector Nikki Colfs from Mackay District said the results of the operation were an outstanding example of work done by the Drug and Serious Crime Group, working in conjunction with local police to protect the people of Mackay region.

"Any opportunity to disrupt criminal networks and remove of firearms and dangerous drugs from the community helps make Mackay a safer place," Detective Inspector Colfs said.
