The Finocchiaro CLP Government is strengthening water security for Kings Canyon, announcing upgraded storage to support one of the Northern Territory's most iconic tourism destinations, Watarrka National Park.

Minister for Essential Services, Steve Edgington, said Power and Water has awarded Territory business Exact Contracting a $7.76 million contract to deliver a major upgrade boosting water storage and security at Kings Canyon.

"In our year of growth, certainty and security, delivering better essential infrastructure is central to the CLP Government's commitment to restoring the Territory lifestyle and making the Territory a great place to live, work, visit and invest.

"Watarrka National Park is one of the Northern Territory's most iconic tourism destinations, and this investment in Kings Canyon is about making sure our infrastructure can support future growth in the region," Mr Edgington said.

The project will replace two ageing 180 kilolitre (kL) fibreglass water storage tanks with two new 1 megalitre (ML) glass fused steel potable water tanks at Kings Canyon Resort.

The upgrade will provide more than five times the treated water storage capacity from 360 kL to 2 ML.

Kings Canyon Resort relies on the storage system to service both the resort and the Watarrka Health Centre. The new tanks will help ensure supply remains uninterrupted during busy tourism periods, peak visitation and scheduled maintenance.

"By more than quintupling treated water storage capacity, we're not only strengthening water storage security for the resort, local services and the thousands of visitors who come to experience Watarrka each year, we're also supporting the continued growth of the tourism industry and giving operators confidence to invest in the region's future," Mr Edgington said.

"Projects like this $7.76 million water storage upgrade for Kings Canyon will provide the certainty needed for continued tourism investment and regional development over the next 20 years.

"Investing in water security in Kings Canyon shows the CLP Government is delivering right across the Territory and helping create a secure and better life for now and for our kids in the future."

The project is expected to be completed by April 2027.
