Port Phillip Bay is set to enjoy a range of improvements under a commitment by the Coalition to develop a Bay Plan.
Victorian Chamber Chief Executive Mark Stone AM welcomed the Coalition's commitment and said the Bay Plan, a key priority of the Chamber, will protect Port Phillip Bay for current and future generations.
"This wonderful natural asset is enjoyed by millions of Victorians and visitors each year but lacks a comprehensive plan to make the most of environmental, commercial, residential, recreational, event and tourism activities," said Mr Stone.
While existing coastal, foreshore and marine management policy has encouraged sustainable recreation and social uses of the Bay, much less attention has been given to longer term planning and governance.
With ten councils bordering the Bay, centralised governance and planning are essential to unlocking the full potential of the Bay.
A coordinated strategy means Victoria will be able to start identifying and assessing environmentally sound investment options for visitor infrastructure, commercial expansion, eco-tourism, boating, fishing and recreation, marine safety and residential and mixed-use development.
"With the right planning and coordination between government, business and the wider community, we can ensure Port Phillip Bay remains a jewel in Melbourne's crown," Mr Stone said.
