The NSW Grants Commission has announced that it will not be proceeding with proposed changes to the methodology used to distribute Financial Assistance Grant funding to NSW councils.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council was at risk of losing $5.1 million per year in grant funding under the now-scrapped proposal.

Alongside 54 other NSW councils, Snowy Monaro Regional Council lodged a submission to express concern about the changes and to propose more equitable alternatives for the distribution of Financial Assistance Grant funding.

The Grants Commission noted the views of Country Mayors Association of NSW that any methodology changes should not lead to councils being worse off.

Financial Assistance Grant methodology may be up for review again by the Commission in 2029/2030. Council is well-placed to provide input on how funding can be most equitably distributed to the local government areas most in need, should this future review occur.
