Community Brings Colour To Olds Park With New Mural

Georges River Council

Olds Park Skate Park and Netball Precinct in Penshurst has a fresh new look, thanks to a vibrant community mural created using a paint-by-numbers design.

Locals of all ages came together to bring the mural to life, one number at a time.

Hosted by Georges River Council in collaboration with WONDERWALLS, the event invited the community to roll up their sleeves and take part in a free, hands-on creative experience.

The opportunity arose via Transport for NSW's Places to Love Program, with community consultation taking place to develop a vision for how to make Olds Park more vibrant.

Proposals were received from 11 artists, with WONDERWALLS being selected as the successful artist collective. WONDERWALLS, which includes Sydney-based and internationally acclaimed artist Joel Cameron, have previously demonstrated expertise in delivering artworks in active urban environments. As a skater and coach, Joel holds a firm understanding of developing safe skate etiquette with younger audiences.

Located at the retaining wall around the netball courts, the mural quickly became a shared masterpiece as families, young people and visitors added their own splash of colour. No artistic experience was needed, just enthusiasm and a love for community.

WONDERWALLS' vision of the artwork, 'Play at the Park,' celebrates the area's rich multicultural heritage. The design incorporates Georges River's strong symbol of the dragon and references traditional games such as Jianzi (China), Chowkabara (India), and low-barrier activities like floor is lava and hopscotch/Ek Khutte (Nepal).

The artwork also helps guide and engage younger children naturally away from the skate park to ease congestion while being within sight lines of carers and parents, creating a safer and more supportive environment.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "It was fantastic to see our community come together and contribute to this vibrant mural.

"I'd like to thank WONDERWALLS and our community for being involved in this wonderful project to make Olds Park more lively.

"This project is part of Council's ongoing efforts to activate public spaces through creativity and community connection. If you haven't had the chance to see it, I encourage you to visit the amazing mural at Olds Park Skate Park and Netball Precinct."

This project was proudly funded by Transport for NSW through the Places to Love program.
