Benalla Rural City Council is calling on community members to join a steering committee for the redevelopment of the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre.

At the 24 April Council Meeting, Barkly Street was given in principle support as the preferred site location for the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre (BIRC) Redevelopment. A steering committee will now be established to guide the project through the next stages.

Mayor Cr Danny Claridge said this is a unique opportunity to help shape a significant project for the Benalla community.

"As a member of the steering committee, you will help guide the project through the next stages, and your input will be invaluable in shaping the future of the BIRC and ensuring it meets the needs of our community," Cr Claridge said.

Council has secured a $15 million grant from the Victorian State Government for this project.

"The BIRC, now 40 years old, has been a cornerstone of our community, promoting active and healthy lifestyles," Cr Claridge said.

"However, it faces challenges in meeting community expectations and sporting code compliance due to its age, so this redevelopment aims to address these limitations and create an inclusive sporting hub for all ages."

Council is now seeking two community members to be part of the Steering Committee through an Expression of Interest process.
