A new multi-purpose indoor community sport and meeting room facility for Woden, establishing a new Sport and Recreation Industry Peak Body and investments in making the ACT a premier mountain biking destination, feature as key commitments of the ACT Greens community sports package.
With a focus on community level sports and neighbourhood infrastructure, the ACT Greens have today committed to a $22 million investment in new multi-purpose indoor sports courts, combined with community meeting rooms, in the Woden Town Centre.
"The Greens have long argued that Woden and suburbs in the south are in desperate need of renewal. For too long, local residents have seen closure after closure of community sports venues - Woden's basketball stadium and CIT, and the MPowerdome in Tuggeranong, come to mind. Where the Government has taken these residents for granted, the Greens will step up and deliver," ACT Greens Spokesperson for Sports Emma Davidson said today.
The Greens will also reestablish a sport and recreation industry peak body to support the sector in responding to the challenges of COVID-19 and beyond.
The existing Coalition of Major Participation Sports have called on the ACT Government to provide ongoing funding to a permanent sports industry peak body, who will liaise with government agencies on matters relevant to members and work collaboratively to consider the best possible use of public spending on major sporting events. The ACT Greens strongly support this initiative, and have committed to $200,000 in seed funding for the first two years of operation).
"Organised sports and recreation activities bring us together as a community, and now more than ever we need to find new ways of connecting as we try to build a better normal. The relationship between governments, peak and advisory bodies, and user groups must also be more consultative and collaborative than ever before," Emma Davidson added.
