Competition Bureau and Ontario Energy Board team up in the interest of consumers

The Competition Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to improve the delivery of their respective mandates.
The MOU will facilitate collaboration on educational initiatives and the exchange of information in areas of mutual interest. By enhancing its working relationship with the OEB, the Bureau will gain further insight into Ontario's energy sector while protecting consumers from anti-competitive practices.
The Bureau is always looking to establish strong and collaborative relationships with its partners to ensure that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace.
Quick facts
The OEB is responsible for regulating the electricity and natural gas sectors in Ontario, including investigating complaints, establishing energy utility rates and monitoring Ontario's wholesale electricity market. The OEB protects the interests of consumers and promotes an efficient, reliable and sustainable energy sector.
Decisions made by the Commissioner of Competition and by the OEB are taken independently and in accordance with each organization's respective statute.
Information sharing is subject to the organizations' respective confidentiality and privilege obligations. The organizations do not exchange information if doing so would contravene any relevant legislation, international instruments, policies or guidance documents.
This agreement updates the relationship between the Bureau and OEB, which was first formalized in 2002.
The Bureau also recently signed an MOU with another Ontario energy market regulator: the Market Assessment and Compliance Division of Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator.
