Comprehensive engagement planned for Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement

At the Ordinary Council Meeting held yesterday the Interim Administrator Viv May endorsed the recommendation to place the Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) on Public Exhibition for a minimum of 28 days, commencing 31 August 2020.

The LSPS is a new strategic planning document that all councils in NSW must develop. The Draft Armidale Regional LSPS provides a 20 year land use vision for the Armidale region and has been developed in conjunction with State, Regional and Council Plans including the New England North West Regional Plan 2036 and the Armidale Regional Community Strategic Plan 2017-2027.

The LSPS provides a central point to ensure that regional priorities are placed within a clear local context and tailored to the unique economic, social and environmental characteristics of the Armidale Regional LGA. The vision identifies the future direction for planning to meet the community's changing needs under the themes of economy, community, infrastructure and environment.

Interim Administrator Viv May said the LSPS is an important link in delivering the region's land use vision for the next 20 years.

"The draft LSPS directs where further planning investigations are to be undertaken and implemented to identify how future growth and change will be managed across the LGA, not just in the larger populations of Armidale and Guyra but also in our smaller villages," said Mr May.

"I encourage everyone to review the draft plan and participate in the consultation sessions that will be rolled-out across the LGA. This is particularly important for our smaller communities to understand how their districts fit-in with the broader planning and growth opportunities of the region."

Council has already undertaken a broader body of work with input from the community through a 2040 strategic planning process. The outcomes from this process have informed preparation of the draft LSPS and will facilitate implementation of actions underpinning the planning priorities.
