The Territory Labor Government welcomes the announcement overnight from Newmont Goldcorp confirming the Tanami Expansion 2 project in the Northern Territory.
The announcement follows the recent decision by Santos to buy ConocoPhillips' North Australia gas assets.
The significant expansion, approved Friday, opens up the prospect of further exploration and development in the Tanami district and potentially increases mine life to 2040.
The Tanami operations are located approximately 540 kilometres north west of Alice Springs on Warlpiri owned Aboriginal freehold land.
As noted by Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Paul Kirby:
"This announcement from Newmont Goldcorp is a further vote of confidence in the Northern Territory economy.
"Safely and successfully expanding Tanami operations is good for confidene in investment, good for jobs and good for the economy."
