Construction underway on major job-creating CBD office

Major works have started on a new 20-storey office block at 83 Pirie Street, creating thousands of jobs during construction, with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to be the anchor tenant once complete.

The $300 million new office building is being delivered by Cbus Property Pty Ltd and is expected to create around 2,000 jobs during construction.

The start of major works were marked today by a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony to pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land, the Kaurna people.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the new building will consolidate department staff into one location, creating savings for the taxpayer.

"When DIT moves in, the Department will be the anchor tenant and will occupy around 18,500m2, which will reduce the department's footprint and deliver savings of more than $56 million over the lease term," Minister Wingard said.

"Not only will this project support thousands of jobs during construction, but it will also save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars over ten years from 2023.

"This project supports the South Australian construction industry as the Marshall Liberal Government continues its record $16.7 billion spend on infrastructure around the state."

Designed by Woods Bagot, the 30,645-square-metre office tower will feature large 1,768-square-metre floorplates, an expansive lobby with adjoining cafe and a 500-square-metre Wellness Centre.

A rooftop terrace will create a unique point of difference from other CBD office towers, enhancing the fresh air and collaboration space available to tenants.

Cbus Property's Chief Executive Officer, Adrian Pozzo, said the new development, which is anticipated to serve as the new offices of approximately 3,000 city workers, would bolster the company's diverse investment portfolio, which is currently more than 40 per cent occupied by long-term government tenants.

"We would like to thank the State Government for its endorsement of the development as the anchor tenant," he said.

"Responding to a future Adelaide workforce with a focus on sustainability, wellness, connection to the public community, nature and productivity, 83 Pirie Street is an incredibly exciting project that will optimise the site's potential and create a new landmark for the city, as well as reinvigorate the city's office precinct."
