Consumers Price Index: June 2026 Quarter

The consumers price index (CPI) measures the rate of price change of goods and services purchased by New Zealand households.

The following table shows the price changes for the June 2026 quarter.

Quarterly change

Within the 1.5 percent rise in the CPI in the June 2026 quarter, higher prices were recorded for:

• petrol, up 20.1 percent (49.5 percent contribution to the 1.5 percent rise for all groups)
• other vehicle fuels and lubricants, up 47.7 percent (16.2 percent contribution to all groups)
• purchase of housing, up 1.6 percent (10.2 percent contribution to all groups).

Lower prices were recorded for:

• fruit, down 8.5 percent (-6.3 percent contribution to all groups)
• domestic accommodation services, down 12.0 percent (-5.6 percent contribution to all groups).

Annual change

Within the 4.1 percent increase in the CPI in the 12 months to the June 2026 quarter, higher prices were recorded for:

• petrol, up 27.5 percent (23.5 percent contribution to the 4.1 percent rise for all groups)
• electricity, up 12.0 percent (8.4 percent contribution to all groups)
• other vehicle fuels and lubricants, up 71.0 percent (7.7 percent contribution to all groups).

Lower prices were recorded for:

• oils and fats, down 9.1 percent (-0.9 percent contribution to all groups)
• real estate services, down 4.6 percent (-0.7 percent contribution to all groups).

Distribution of CPI annual price change

In the 12 months to the June 2026 quarter, 83.4 percent of the CPI basket increased in price.

In the 12 months to June 2026, 14.4 percent of the CPI basket increased by between 3.0 and 5.0 percent, up from 9.6 percent in the 12 months to March 2026.

Tradeable and non-tradeable inflation

Tradeable inflation measures final goods and services that are influenced by foreign markets.

Within the 4.9 percent increase in tradeable inflation in the 12 months to the June 2026 quarter, higher prices were recorded for:

• petrol, up 27.5 percent (46.4 percent contribution to the 4.9 percent rise for all groups tradeable)
• other vehicle fuels and lubricants, up 71.0 percent (15.1 percent contribution to all groups tradeable).

Lower prices were recorded for:

• oils and fats, down 9.1 percent (-1.7 percent contribution to all groups tradeable)
• audio-visual equipment, down 18.4 percent (-1.4 percent contribution to all groups tradeable).

Non-tradeable inflation measures final goods and services that do not face foreign competition and is an indicator of domestic demand and supply conditions. However, the inputs of these goods and services can be influenced by foreign competition.

Within the 3.4 percent increase in non-tradeable inflation in the 12 months to the June 2026 quarter, higher prices were recorded for:

• electricity, up 12.0 percent (17.0 percent contribution to the 3.4 percent rise for all groups non-tradeable)
• local authority rates, up 8.8 percent (13.6 percent contribution to all groups non-tradeable).

Lower prices were recorded for:

• milk, cheese, and eggs, down 9.0 percent (-1.7 percent contribution to all groups non-tradeable)
• real estate services, down 4.6 percent (-1.5 percent contribution to all groups non-tradeable).

Catch-up movement for pharmaceutical products

This release includes a catch-up movement for prescription charges within the pharmaceutical products class. We use data from the previous year to estimate prescription uptake. We have incorporated updated uptake data and resolved a processing issue.

Without the catch-up movement, pharmaceutical products would have increased 0.1 percent in the June 2026 quarter compared with the March 2026 quarter. With the catch-up movement, the series decreased 3.3 percent. The pharmaceutical products class represents 0.8 percent of the CPI basket.
