Corangamite CMA staff had an absolute blast yesterday, joining forces with Colac Otway Shire Council staff for a Clean Up Australia Day event at beautiful Meredith Park, home to the endangered Corangamite Water Skink.

The Corangamite Water Skink was discovered in1963 near Lismore, Victoria, and described in1995.It has been found at 31 sites, which represents at least eleven discrete populations. It is endemic to the basalt plains of south-western Victoria and restricted to sites between Colac in the south-east and Lake Bolac in the north-west. Meredith Park has a healthy population of Corangamite Water Skink amongst the basaltic rock piles and remnant shrubs on the edge of Lake Colac.

Tidying up their habitat for Clean-up Australia Day was a great opportunity for our staff to get in amongst it all. Corangamite CMA Snr Project Officer, Land & Catchment Health, Rob Bone said, "It was great to be able to show the Corangamite Water Skink to our staff so they could connect their actions picking up rubbish from Meredith Park to creating suitable habitat for the Corangamite Water Skink."

From spotting skinks to collecting rubbish, enjoying the sunshine, working side by side outdoors and finishing with a well-earned lunch, it was a fun, rewarding morning out on Country. A huge thank you to everyone who joined in and helped tidy up this important habitat, every piece of rubbish removed makes a difference. Want to get involved too?
