Correctives officer charged after being paid to smuggle tobacco into Eastern Suburbs facility, NSW

A Correctives Services officer has been charged with corruption after allegedly supplying tobacco to inmates of an Eastern Suburbs correctional facility for money, NSW Police say.

Officers from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) identified suspicious activity being conducted by a male corrections officer and an investigation was initiated by the State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad.

About 2.20pm yesterday (Tuesday 12 June 2018), police arrested the man at the facility.

Following a search of the premises, correctional officers located and seized tobacco and cigarette lighters.

The 50-year-old man was taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with unlawfully deliver or attempt to deliver anything to inmate, and two counts of agent corruptly receive benefit.

Police will allege in court the man was paid to bring the tobacco into the facility for two inmates.

The officer (who has now been suspended), was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday 4 July 2018.
