Council calls on community witnesses following vandalism

Griffith City Council is appealing to witnesses with information in relation to vandalism at the Penfolds Park Rest Area located at Mackay Avenue.

The damage is believed to have been carried out overnight on Wednesday 23 August or the early hours of Thursday 24 August 2023.

Director of Infrastructure and Operations Phil King said while the cost to repair the wheel tracks may be minimal, the time it takes for repair and to allow the grass to flourish is considerable.

"The matter has been reported to the police, but surely someone knows who did this," said Mr King.

"Council has a policy in place to encourage the public to play a role in safeguarding the assets of the community. I urge anyone who saw anything to come forward."

Under Council's Vandalism Reward Policy, Council will pay a reward of up to $5000 to members of the public supplying information which results in the successful prosecution of a person or persons responsible for damaging Council property via acts of vandalism, graffiti or rubbish dumping.

Any resident who has information relating to the identity of the culprits is asked to report the incident to the local police or Council on 1300 176 077.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran also expressed his concern over the senseless vandalism.

"Council is committed to providing the best possible facilities for our community to enjoy, but the recurring acts of vandalism makes it that much harder to ensure funds are being diverted to where they should be," Cr Curran said.

"This attack is similar to one that occurred at Ted Scobie Oval back in June.

"I'm not sure what satisfaction these fools get from these actions but our community deserves better."
