Council calls on local artists for public art in Russell Street

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from local artists, designers, creatives and fabricators wishing to be considered for public art commissions in the Russell Street Refresh Project.

TRC Infrastructure CommitteeChairand Russell Street Refresh Public Art Reference Group Chair, Councillor Carol Taylor said the commission will provide opportunities for local artists and creatives to create public art that enhances and tells local stories about the historical street.

"The area has a rich and diverse Indigenous and colonial history that local artists and creatives can draw inspiration from," Cr Taylor said.

"Nearby West Creek was a traditional meeting place for First Nations communities travelling to the Bunya Mountains.

"The street was established in the 1850s and is still home to many heritage buildings.

"Public art opportunities could include integrated design treatments in pavements and awnings, gobo lighting projections, small sculptures and a major mural.

"This is a unique opportunity and Council encourages all local artists, designers, creatives and fabricators to express their interest in taking part.

"We've engaged specialist arts consultancy Artfully to manage the public art process.

"EOIs are now open and close Wednesday 15 September 2021.

"A public information session to discuss the project, artwork opportunities and the EOI process will be held on Saturday 28 August from 10:30am-12pm at Toowoomba Sports Club.

"The session is open to anyone with an interest in submitting an EOI or finding out more about the project and public art. Everyone is welcome."

In consideration of COVID-19, registrations are essential.
