At its meeting on 8 September, Hume City Council endorsed a name for the soon to be completed arts and culture facility located at Jacksons Hill in Sunbury.
The facility will be known as Artrise – Gather, Connect and Create on the Hill. The name was chosen for its strength, simplicity and symbolism, representing the rise of creativity, community, and new beginnings on the hill.
This marks a key milestone in the broader precinct's transformation as it continues to undergo refurbishments until later this year.
This Artrise name reflects the community's vision for the site as a place where creativity, culture and connection come together. It will apply to Buildings 22 and 24, formerly the women's refractory and a work shed, which are being refurbished as part of Council's investment in arts and cultural infrastructure.
The naming process involved engagement with anchor users (current creative groups working up at Jacksons Hill), members of the Community Advisory Board, the former Community Advisory Group, and representatives of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
The by-line "Gather, Connect and Create on the Hill" was selected to reflect the facility's role in bringing people together through shared cultural experiences.
Council has also approved the initiation of a formal Place Naming process through Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) to rename the broader precinct in which the facility sits, currently referred to as the Sunbury Community Arts and Cultural Precinct. This process will take approximately 12–18 months and will include further engagement with the wider community.
Together, these actions support the development of a cohesive identity for the precinct and reinforce Council's commitment to embedding community voice in its future.

Quotes attributable to Hume City Mayor, Councillor Jarrod Bell:
"The name Artrise is a powerful reflection of the community's vision for Jacksons Hill. It speaks to creativity, connection between the many groups who will collaborate at the space, and a new beginning for what is a historically significant site in Sunbury.
Most importantly, this new name and the precinct's future has been shaped by everyday community members who will help bring it to life."
