Swan Hill Rural City Council is taking proactive steps to improve parking availability in the CBD by leasing the Curlewis Street carpark for a trial period of 12 months. This initiative will create additional spaces for shoppers, and visitors, making it easier for everyone to access the city centre.
The new ticketed carpark on Curlewis Street, located conveniently near the rear entrance of Clark's Gift Salon and with a walkway through to Campbell Street shopping strip, will offer an alternative to parking on the main street at the same rate of $1.40 per hour for a maximum of two hours.
Council's Mayor Cr Stuart King said the move forms part of Council's broader commitment to supporting local businesses, enhancing the visitor experience, and ensuring the CBD remains a vibrant and accessible hub.
"By increasing parking options, Council aims to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and encourage more people to spend time in the heart of Swan Hill, shopping locally and boosting our economy.
"Parking is a key consideration for anyone visiting our CBD, whether for shopping, dining, or the like. By leasing the Curlewis Street carpark, we are providing more convenient options for the community, supporting our local businesses, and helping our city centre thrive," he said.
Adam Laughlin the Chairman of the Board for Swan Hill Incorporated said the Curlewis Street carpark is in the heart of the Swan Hill CBD, and opening it helps activate the whole strip by making it easier for people to drop in, meet friends, run errands and support local businesses.
"More than 50 extra spaces at Curlewis Street means less time hunting for a park and more time using the town. That small change makes a big difference to how people experience Swan Hill," Mr Laughlin added.
The Curlewis Street carpark will be open to the public from this Monday, 2 February 2026, with Council continuing to monitor usage to ensure parking needs are met effectively.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to make Swan Hill's CBD more accessible, convenient, and vibrant for both residents and visitors.
