The Hills Shire Council lit up an atrium at its Norwest Administration Building in a show of support for the State Emergency Service's (SES) Wear it Orange Wednesday.

Wear it Orange Wednesday, or WoW Day, is dedicated to thanking our hardworking SES volunteers.

While the service's primary focus is to provide emergency assistance, especially at times of fires, storms and floods, they also assist in rescues, including road, bush and vertical rescues, and they are sometimes called upon to act as first responders.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne thanked the Hills SES for all they do to keep the region safe.

"We are so fortunate to have more than 150 Hills SES volunteers who are willing to give freely of their time to help protect people, their livelihoods and possessions during difficult times," Mayor Byrne said.

"Our volunteers drop everything at a moment's notice to answer a call for help, and this may require them to work in unfavourable conditions and at all hours of the day and night.

"They also commit to many years of training to perfect their skills and talents, and this is on top of their careers, work and family commitments.

"There will never be enough ways to say 'thank you' for the valuable work our SES do, but I hope tonight's orange light show goes some way towards expressing our utmost gratitude.

"Council is proud of the relationship that we have with our Hills SES and we are happy to throw our support behind WoW day," Mayor Byrne added.
