Narrandera Shire Council has been informed that the historic Narrandera post office, located on East Street, will not be reopening after serving the community for over 100 years.
Mayor Neville Kschenka expressed disappointment at the closure of the iconic building, which has been part of the town's fabric.
"While Council is disappointed by the decision to not reopen the old premises, we will continue to work with Australia Post to seek a permanent solution that is centrally accessible to all," Mayor Kschenka said.
An Australia Post spokesperson confirmed that work is underway to identify a suitable, long-term location for postal services in Narrandera.
"Australia Post has been actively exploring options for a permanent full-service post office in Narrandera.
We've made carefully considered decisions to establish a lease at a new Narrandera location that caters for the working of a safe, efficient post office while meeting modern accessibility standards. Work to finalise arrangements is ongoing, and we will keep customers updated.
Australia Post acknowledges the importance and proud history of the original East Street building," the spokesperson said.
Council will continue to advocate for a site that reflects the needs of the community, both now and into the future.
