Direct flights between Townsville and Singapore could begin as early as next year, with Townsville City Council supporting a bid to fight for the new international flight route.
Townsville Airport and Council are collaborating to lobby for a direct connection to Singapore's Changi Airport – which recorded over 65 million passenger movements last year.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the benefits to our city will be huge if direct flights to Singapore commence.
"Townsville has several economic ties to Singapore including the JCU campus and the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative," Cr Hill said.
"This route will also open Townsville up to further trade with Asia and benefit our education, tourism and hospitality industries.
"Council is always looking for ways to support and encourage economic growth in Townsville – a direct link to Singapore will create jobs for the region and boost our economy."
Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the flights will benefit both tourists and residents in Townsville and the region.
"A direct route to Singapore opens Townsville to the Asia region, bringing visitors to our city and allowing residents to travel without having to make the trip to Cairns or Brisbane," Cr Walker said.
"This is a great opportunity to attract tourists to our city and boost our economy."
Townsville Airport Chief Operating Officer Kevin Gill welcomed the initiative, which comes as the airport prepares for a multi-million refurbishment as part of Project Alive.
"We welcome Council's support to attract international services into Townsville Airport," Mr Gill said.
"There are significant economic benefits from increased air capacity, which will boost all parts of our economy in particular hospitality, accommodation and tourism."
Townsville Airport is currently undergoing an $80 million refurbishment which will secure the airport's position as a vital transport hub for North Queensland into the future.
