Townsville City Council is continuing to support local businesses with a strategy to use Townsville operators for the recovery works wherever possible.
Council endorsed the strategy last week, which aims to ensure approved sole or specialised suppliers, local buy and existing panel arrangements are utilised to deliver recovery projects without delay.
Townsville City Council has been activated for jointly funded Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) assistance.
Townsville Local Recovery Resilience Group Chair Cr Les Walker said the scope of the recovery projects needed is still unknown while assessments are being completed.
"We don't know the full extent of projects needed to get our city back on its feet and better than ever just yet," Cr Walker said.
"The DRFA works are crucial for re-establishing our infrastructure and helping cover the costs to rebuild the city."
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the recovery process would take a long time and involve the entire community.
"By using local businesses and contractors for our recovery projects where we can, we are supporting the community and building resilience for our traders," Cr Hill said.
"Council wants to provide locals with long-term opportunities and ensuring our facilities and infrastructure are available to the public as soon as possible."
Governance and Finance Committee Chair Cr Verena Coombe said the Council decision would give local contractors the best chance to secure work on recovery projects.
"Council is committed to ensuring our local businesses play a major role in rebuilding our city while providing value for money to the community," Cr Coombe said.
