Ararat Rural City Council is encouraging local businesses with items on the footpath to complete a Street Furniture Permit application.
Businesses using A-frame signs, flags, goods displays, or outdoor dining areas need a permit. Council's Community Safety team is reminding traders of the requirement as it works with businesses to keep footpaths safe and accessible while supporting welcoming, easy-to-spot shopfronts.
Council Chief Executive Officer Phuong Au said the permits were a practical way to support local businesses and everyone who uses the footpath.
"We want businesses to be open, visible, and inviting, and we know that signs, displays, and outdoor dining can help bring people into our shopping areas," Ms Au said.
"A permit helps us make sure those items are placed safely and meet the relevant requirements. It's about finding a sensible balance between supporting traders and keeping footpaths clear for the community."
