Council's Coat Of Arms Glows Yellow for Road Safety

Wagga Wagga City Council's Coat of Arms in the Civic Centre forecourt will be bathed in yellow light each evening of the week 11 to 18 May, as part of Council's support for National Road Safety Week.

The Australia wide initiative sees road safety advocates and stakeholders join to emphasise the critical importance of safe road practices and to honour the memory of lives lost and impacted by road incidents.

In 2024 alone, 1300 lives were lost on our nation's roads, while around another 44,000 people were hospitalised as a result of road crashes. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24 (roadsafetyweek.com.au).

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said National Road Safety Week is a chance for the community to think about what they can do to improve safety on our roads.

"Whenever we hop behind the steering wheel of a vehicle, we have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer for all users," Cr Tout said.

"The decisions you make when you're on the road can make the difference between whether you and your loved ones or other people on the road around you get home safely.

"It's important to consider what we can do to prevent loss of life or serious injury on our roads in the future; to make the pledge 'to drive so others survive'."

You can join the movement and show support for National Road Safety Week by placing a yellow ribbon on your vehicle, attending local events, promoting awareness on social media using #NRSW or #DriveSoS, and taking the online pledge for safe driving at roadsafetyweek.com.au

Ahead of the official start of the awareness week, a road safety-based community event will be held at the Cross Street carpark (off Tarcutta Street) on Saturday 10 May from 10am to 2pm.

Residents are encouraged to join Transport for NSW and the NRMA for the event, which will involve car safety checks, kids' car seat checks, car safety tips, workshops, a community barbecue and face painting.
