COVID-impacted businesses need to be heard and supported

Many Tasmanian businesses, workers, and their customers have been left confused, anxious and overwhelmed since the government opened the borders.

Shadow Minister for Small Business Janie Finlay said while some information and support programs had been provided by the government to small businesses, there were many operators who remain uncertain about how they should trade or face closing their doors.

"Small businesses are calling out for open and clear communication from the government so they can have confidence that if they have to close, they know that support is available," Ms Finlay said.

"Tasmanians are doing the right thing and isolating if they are a close contact with a confirmed COVID case, but unfortunately the down side is many businesses are short-staffed or have no other option but to close their doors.

"Many operators invest their life savings into their business dream and need support to get through this next chapter. Business owners are already exhausted and overwhelmed with the previous loss of revenue and closures over what has been a really challenging two years."

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the government needed to be more transparent.

"Peter Gutwein has opened the borders to COVID and business and workers have been left with little to no support," Ms White said.

"Like Prime Minister Scott Morrison, it appears Premier Gutwein is happy to pretend everything is fine as his reopening plan crumbles and COVID spreads rapidly across Tasmania."

Ms Finlay said the government must listen to those businesses which have been adversely impacted.

"Many businesses are doing well but for the ones who aren't, it's devastating. I urge Tasmanians, where they can, to safely support their local businesses and rally around them during this time.

"The government needs to be more flexible in supporting those businesses and individuals who have found themselves in unique situations.

"Tasmanian business operators need support, they need clarity and deserve transparency from the government."
