The first stage of works to upgrade Purkiss Reserve will get underway soon, with the contract to deliver new perimeter fencing awarded to local company Harvey Developments (NT) Pty Ltd.
The Territory Labor Government is investing $9 million towards a major overhaul of the Reserve which will see new and upgraded sport and recreation facilities for the community to enjoy, particularly families and young people.
Works will include a new playground, multipurpose field, cricket nets, fitness stations, barbecue and seating areas and a bike and walking path. There will also be new parking facilities, upgraded lighting, new fencing and a resurface of the outdoor courts.
Works have been prioritised in consultation with Purkiss Reserve user groups, who will continue to be engaged throughout construction.
A Working Group, made up of key Purkiss Reserve user groups, Barkly Council and the NT Government will continue to work together to ensure a great outcome for families and young people.
The upgraded facilities will encourage active participation in organised sports for young people in Tennant Creek.
The Government is investing in sporting infrastructure in the Barkly region, with the recent completion of Elliott Oval upgrades.
The NT Government provided $500,000 towards the project as part of its $10 million Remote Sports Infrastructure Program, with Barkly Regional Council contributing around $400,000.
Located in the heart of town, the new oval will provide more opportunities for sporting activities, including Barkly AFL home-and-away games and junior sports development programs; performing arts festivals and other community events which will contribute to positive outcomes for families and young peoples health and wellbeing.

Tennant Creek deserves the best possible sporting facilities for young people, which is why the Territory Government is investing $9 million into Purkiss Reserve.
The funding will ensure these vital facilities continue to provide social, cultural and economic benefits to the community.
The Territory Government continues to work with regional councils across the Territory, investing in community assets to build vibrant communities, boost the economy and create local jobs.

The upgrading of the existing perimeter fence is the first of a number of upgrade packages that will be released to public tender over the coming months.
