Creating Jobs and Supporting the Community - $6.4 million for Katherine CORRECTION

The Territory Labor Government is investing an additional $14.4 million in improving Local Government sporting and entertainment facilities, and the town of Katherine is set to receive $6.4 million of that funding.

The money will help create jobs, support local businesses and ensure vital sporting facilities continue to provide social, cultural and economic benefits to the community.

The investment includes $2 million for the Katherine Show Grounds to upgrade the oval lighting, fencing and camping areas, and to extend and air-condition the Turf Pavilion. It also includes shelters for grandstands, shading of the equestrian area, camp draft facility upgrades, and road and entry design.

The remaining $4.4 million will be spent on the Katherine Sports Grounds on additional storage and car parking, road upgrades, a club room, hot office facilities and an expansion of the existing Don Dale pavilion.

Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss:

We continue to invest in the Territorys community assets because we know they build vibrant communities, boost the economy and create local jobs.

Revitalising our facilities ensures our sporting clubs and associations have access to facilities where they can live active, healthy lives.

We have worked with the councils in Katherine, Tennant Creek and Darwin to ensure this funding supports their key priorities and is aligned with their master planning process.

Member for Katherine, Sandra Nelson:

The $4.2 million will be spent on delivering projects at the Katherine Show Grounds and Katherine Sport Grounds, which are both much-loved and well-used assets in our community.

These facilities host popular events such as community shows, concerts, rodeos and local sporting fixtures, so it is crucial they are maintained and upgraded to provide a positive, quality experience for participants and attendees.

The upgrades will also provide opportunities for local tradies, which means jobs for Territorians.

This investment by the Territory Labor Government is a real win for our town, and will provide the Katherine community with modern, updated facilities we can all enjoy.

CORRECTION: The amount is $6.4 million, not $4.2 million
