Critical incident after fatal crash in North of Tamworth

A critical incident investigation has been launched following the death of a man in a head-on collision between a car and truck north of Tamworth today, NSW Police say.

Around 8.45am today, police initiated a pursuit of a stolen vehicle on the New England Highway near Bendemeer, 40km north of Tamworth.

The driver of the car died at the scene following a collision with a truck. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and has been taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

The truck caught fire, which spread to bushland on the side of the road and fire crews are on site.

The New England Highway is closed in both directions. Road users are advised to make alternative travel arrangements. Diversions are in place between Uralla and Bendemeer.

A critical incident team from New England Local Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the Coroner.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
