A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man died following a police pursuit and crash in Sydney's south-west overnight.
Officers attached to Campbelltown Highway Patrol attempted to stop the driver of a Lancer shortly after 11.20pm (Thursday 24 December 2020).
A pursuit was initiated when the driver failed to stop when directed; however, a short time later the vehicle struck a power pole on Eastwood Road, Leppington.
A male passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver is now under police guard in hospital where he is undergoing treatment for injuries to his arm.
A critical incident team from Fairfield City Police Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
That investigation will be subject to independent review.
All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man's death.
