A critical incident investigation has been launched following the injury of a man during a confrontation with Police, NSW Police say.
Police attended a shopping centre at Charlestown just after 1pm (Wednesday 28 February 2018), to arrest a man allegedly in connection with an earlier domestic-related incident.
Officers approached the man outside a liquor store, when he produced a knife.
The 22-year old man started stabbing himself several times before a Taser was used in an effort to stop him.
Officers commenced CPR before he was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
A critical incident team from Newcastle City Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
As is standard practice, that investigation will be subject to an independent review and monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
No further details are available at this time; however police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Anyone who can assist police should contact Crime Stoppers.
