Critical investigation launched after man's death - St Marys

A critical incident investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Sydney's west.

Officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command were patrolling the St Marys area when they approached a man on Acacia Avenue, shortly before 10.30am today (Wednesday 23 December 2020).

The 20-year-old man ran from the officers into a nearby backyard where he reportedly threatened police.

Initial reports suggest, a struggle ensued during which the man accessed one of the officer's firearms before a second officer shot the man in the abdomen.

Despite the efforts of police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, he died at the scene.

One of the officers, a male senior constable, was also treated at the scene after being bitten by a dog during the incident. He has since been taken to hospital for further treatment.

A critical incident team from Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.

All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man's death.

No further details are available at this time.
