Crowds Praised for Conduct in Mardi Gras Police Operation

A high-visibility police operation to keep the community safe during the 48th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade has concluded.

Hundreds of thousands of people watched more than 160 floats and almost 10,000 participants from the LGBTQIA+ community celebrate yesterday (Saturday 28 February 2026).

The high-visibility police operation involved general duties officers assisted by specialist officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Youth Command, Licensing Police and Mounted Command.

Officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad, who had the capability and training to use long-arms, proactively patrolled the event, however there was no specific, active or imminent threat.

There were no significant arrests made as part of the operation.

About 8.30pm, four people, who were part of a group previously removed from participating in the parade, were arrested for a breach of the peace on Liverpool Street, Sydney.

They were removed from the parade ground and were issued with move on directions, which they complied with. No charges were laid as a result of the incident.

Operation Mardi Gras 2026 Commander, Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty praised the behaviour of attendees.

"NSW Police had a strong presence during the Mardi Gras Parade, focusing on public safety and security to ensure everyone had a good night," Assistant Commissioner Hegarty said.

"The event brought large crowds to the city, and we were pleased to see people celebrating safely and respectfully.

"Most people were well-behaved, followed the directions of authorities, looked after each other and got home safely.

"Police would like to thank the community for their responsible behaviour throughout this year's Mardi Gras Parade."
