In Port Phillip, our community embodies that diversity, one in three residents was born overseas and more than 120 languages are spoken locally. Investments that tell migration stories, commission public art and improve the everyday experience of our high streets help strengthen inclusion while supporting traders and celebrating their cultural diversity.
What's being funded in Port Phillip
Bay Street, Port Melbourne
The project for Bay Street is supported by a $96,000 Victorian Government grant, with a $24,000 Council co-contribution, bringing the total project value to $120,000. Council will partner with the Port Melbourne Traders Association to extend a migration themed art trail from Waterfront Place/Station Pier, building on the area's rich stories of arrival and cultural diversity to draw more foot traffic along Bay Street. The City's migration trail begins at Waterfront Place and Station Pier, anchoring this storytelling approach in local heritage.
Building on what's already working: The Bay Street project will extend migration storytelling from Station Pier and the beach, an important site for both first peoples and for generations of newcomers who first set foot in Victoria, reinforcing and celebrating Port Melbourne's identity as a place of arrival and welcome. (Station Pier anchors both the State's Port Heritage Trail and Council's migration Trail.)
Carlisle Street, Balaclava
Multicultural business precincts are cornerstones of local economies and social life. The project at Carlisle Street is supported by a $141,200 Victorian Government grant and a $28,000 Council co-contribution. It will focus on artistic upgrades to Carlisle Street shopfronts and will be delivered in partnership with local businesses and the Carlisle Street Traders Association.
Building on what's already working: On Carlisle Street, the revitalised arts program will build on recent activation successes and traders' collaboration, reinforcing the street's distinct multicultural character while encouraging more people to visit, dwell and enjoy the range of offerings from local businesses.
