Cyclist seriously injured in crash, NSW

A cyclist has been seriously injured at Darling Point after he was ejected from his bicycle yesterday, NSW Police say.

Witnesses told police a 43-year-old man was riding his bicycle at high speed about 5.30 pm yesterday, along Yarranabbe Road, Darling Point and failed to negotiate a roundabout.

He was thrown from the bicycle and suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, a fractured eye socket, fractured collarbone and internal injuries to his spleen and liver.

No other vehicles were involved.

He was not wearing a helmet.

He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and hospital staff notified police.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, Acting Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said the serious crash highlights the need for all cyclists to ride safely and always wear a helmet.

"This serious crash is very concerning and we are urging all riders to take the necessary precautions to remain safe on the roads.

"On Monday, we conducted an operation aimed at educating cyclists and motorists and raising their awareness to the importance of being careful and watching out for all road users.

"We issued 52 fines for riders not wearing helmets during the operation and we will continue to urge cyclists to wear helmets when riding.

"So far this year, five cyclists died on NSW roads, the same number as last year and they are vulnerable road users and need to ride to survive," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
