Damaging Winds, Large Hail And Heavy Rain For NSW

NSW SES

Communities in NSW are being urged to be vigilant ahead of potentially dangerous thunderstorms and destructive winds.

A severe weather warning remains current on Tuesday night for heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hailstones for parts of Central West Slopes and Plains, Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western Forecast Districts.

The weather system is expected to track east over Wednesday, into Thursday night across the central and inland NSW, Illawarra and NSW south coast, with widespread heavy rain of ranging from 60 to 100mm with isolated falls of 140mm possible.

There is a risk of gusty winds and heavy rain along the Illawarra coast on Wednesday night into Thursday, with damaging and locally destructive winds due to thunderstorms possible.

NSW SES State Duty Commander, Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey, is urging people to stay across the latest warnings.

"This system is expected to be fast moving and dynamic," Assistant Commissioner Storey said.

"These storms may bring destructive winds and large hail in many locations. While we will be closely monitoring the development of these thunderstorms, we are expecting it to be very windy over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Assistant Commissioner Storey said it is essential people take steps to stay safe.

"Secure loose items around your property, tie down trampolines, and put away furniture that might become projectiles in the wind," he said.

"Park your cars away from trees and powerlines."

Heavy rain may also bring the risk of flash flooding. The NSW SES advises you to never drive through flooded roads. If you come across a flooded road turn around and find an alternative route.
