Bayside Care and Support's Home Maintenance Officers play a vital role in helping older residents live safely and independently in their own homes. From small repairs and safety modifications, their work makes everyday life easier and more secure.
Rupen is one of the team's long-service Home Maintenance Officers. We spent a day with him to see what a typical day looks like on the job.
"It's not just about fixing things," says Rupen. "It's about making sure people feel safe, seen, and supported. I love seeing the difference our work makes, it can actually be life-changing for some clients."
8.30am ☕
Rupen arrives at the office, coffee in hand and ready to start the day.
He checks the day's bookings, reviews the Occupational Therapist's notes and makes sure his electric van, 'Evie', is fully charged.
8.45am 🔨
First job of the day is installing banister rails for a couple who have found their front steps increasingly difficult to manage.

10.00am 🏠
A new client welcomes Rupen. He installs a smoke alarm and runs through home safety checks.
11.00am ⚠️
Rupen applies slip-resistant tape to the floor of a client's home following a recent fall. He also removes a large rug to reduce trip hazards.
12.00pm 🥪
Rupen takes a break in a local park and then it's off to the next job.
1.00pm 🛠️
At the next home, he repairs a kitchen cupboard door that has come off its hinges.
2.00pm 🌷
Rupen builds a small ramp to help a client reach his garden again. He also lowers the clothesline to make it easier to use.
4.00pm 🚗
Back at the office, Rupen debriefs with the team and prepares Evie for the following day.

"We had some unusual maintenance requests and Rupen came and fixed everything with a smile" - said Bayside Care and Support client, Kathleen
