Homicide Squad detectives are investigating following a death in police custody in Buninyong tonight, Victoria Police say.
Police received a request to assist in the transport of a 47-year-old man to hospital in relation to mental health issues about 5.15pm.
On arrival at the Midland Highway address, the Buninyong man ran from police for a distance before being caught. .
While attempting to arrest the man when he appears to have had a medical episode.
Police attempted to revive the man until Ambulance Victoria arrived and took over.
Despite the efforts of emergency service personnel, the man died at the scene.
A post mortem examination will be conducted to try and determine the cause of death.
All deaths in police custody are investigated by the Homicide Squad, with oversight from Professional Standards Command as per standard practice.
