Deputy Mayor Announces Resignation After 13 Years Of Service

Gilgandra Shire Council's (GSC) Deputy Mayor Cr Ash Walker, has announced his intention to step down from the role, effective following the October Council meeting on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.

After thirteen years of dedicated service to the Gilgandra Region, Cr Ash Walker has advised that it is the right time to step aside and make way for new leadership, as he prepares to pursue the next chapter of his personal and professional journey.

"Serving the Gilgandra Region and its people has been both an honour and a privilege," says Walker. "Over more than a decade, I've had the opportunity to work alongside committed Councillors, passionate community members, and a resilient local government team - all united by a shared goal of making Gilgandra stronger, more vibrant, and more sustainable."

Reflecting on his time in office, he expressed his appreciation for the many experiences and lessons gained through public service.

"I have learned more than I ever imagined about leadership, about listening, about resilience, and above all, about the power of community. I leave this position with a deep respect for the responsibilities of public office and the communities we serve. It is my hope that the foundations we've built will continue to support progress and innovation for years to come."

Walker also paid tribute to the strong relationships he has built during his tenure, including with Mayor Cr Doug Batten.

"I deeply value the longstanding relationship I've had with Mayor Batten. His leadership, integrity and commitment to the Gilgandra region is unwavering. It has been a privilege to work alongside him in service of our community."

Walker confirmed that he will work closely with GSC in the lead-up to his departure to ensure a smooth and responsible transition.

In closing, he shared a series of personal acknowledgements:

On the community: "The Gilgandra Region is a special place. Serving this incredible community has been a personal and professional honour. Thank you Gilgandra for your trust, your passion, and your commitment to building a better future and region together."

On family: "To my wife Lib, and daughters Anna and Neve - thank you for your patience and endless support through every late night, difficult decision, and proud moment. I really couldn't have done this without you."

On colleagues and public service: "I leave my position as Deputy Mayor with deep gratitude for the dedicated colleagues I've had the privilege to work alongside. Public service is never easy, but with Councillors like you, it's always been worth it."

While stepping down from the Deputy Mayoral role, he reiterated his ongoing commitment to the Gilgandra Region.

"I look forward to continuing to contribute in other ways and will always remain a passionate advocate for this remarkable community."
