Detectives re-appeal for info into suspicious house fire in Koonawarra

Police are re-appealing to the community for information into the circumstances surrounding a suspicious fire that destroyed an Illawarra home two months ago, NSW Police say.

Emergency services responded to reports of a house fire on Kimbarra Crescent, Koonawarra, about 8.40am Sunday 1 October 2017.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command arrived to find the home well alight, and despite the efforts of fire fighters, it was destroyed.

The residents weren’t home at the time, but their pet dog was killed in the fire.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Local detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire, which they believe was deliberately lit.

They are appealing to identify a man, who witnesses reported seeing running away from the home toward Karingal Crescent shortly after the fire started.

He is described as being between 170cm and 180cm tall, of a thin build, and wearing all black.

Anyone who knows the identity of the man, or who has information that may assist investigators, is urged to contact Lake Illawarra Police.

Information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers.
