This month is the perfect opportunity to Detox your Home.
Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service allowing residents to dispose of common, highly toxic chemicals without impacting their health or the environment.
As part of Detox your Home 2023, residents can drop off approved chemicals for free at the Mildura Landfill and Transfer Station on Saturday 16 September between 9.30am and 12.30pm.
Common products such as weedkiller, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics, and cooking oil are all materials harmful to the environment and should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks.
Councillor for Environment and Sustainability Jason Modica said these events are a convenient way to help Mildura residents safely clear out unwanted household chemicals from their sheds, cupboards and kitchen sinks.
"More than 50 people registered their attendance at last years' Detox your Home event, and approximately 1,700 litres of chemicals including flammables, oils, pesticides and other toxic liquids were collected and disposed of by the experts," Cr Modica said.
"It's great to see Mildura residents continuing to demonstrate their commitment to keeping our environment safe, and it's encouraging to see the number of community members already registered for this years' event."

The following items can be dropped off:
• Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners
• Garden – herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, poisons
• Household – cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers
• Car – wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid.

Detox your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licenced facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal. Chemicals collected are processed and recovered or recycled wherever possible. If they cannot be reused in any way, they are safely disposed of.
