Devonport man dies in Tasman Highway truck rollover

A 71-year-old man from Devonport died after the semi-trailer he was driving rolled on the Tasman Highway near Picaninny Point this morning.

The truck was travelling north carrying a heavy section of bridge infrastructure when it left the highway just after 9am.

Officers from Tasmania Police, Ambulance Tasmania and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator attended.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Tasman Highway remains blocked from the intersection with Elephant Pass Rd to just north of Bicheno as the Crash Investigation Unit and Forensic Services investigate the possible causes of the crash and the truck is removed from the scene.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

Anyone who saw the truck around the time of the crash is asked to contact the Northern Crash Investigation Unit on 6777 3936 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperstas.com.au

Police would particularly like to hear from the driver or passengers of a white vehicle that may have been travelling south and saw the truck near Picaninny Point just before the crash.
