The NSW Environment Protection Authority welcomes the Blacktown Local Court’s decision to convict and fine Dial-A-Dump (EC) Pty Ltd following the EPA’s successful prosecution of the company for two charges of failing to cover asbestos waste at its Eastern Creek landfill.
Dial-a-Dump had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
On Thursday (19 July) the Local Court Magistrate found in favor of the EPA, fining Dial-A-Dump $23,300 and ordering it to pay the EPA’s legal costs of $25,000 and to publicise details of the conviction in Inside Waste magazine.
EPA Waste and Resource Recovery Acting Director Greg Sheehy said that the Court’s decision reflects the EPA’s and the community’s expectations that safety comes first when asbestos waste is involved.
"The regulations place strict controls on the transport, handling and disposal of asbestos waste. These controls are in place to safeguard the environment and the community," Mr Sheehy said.
"The EPA will take action against any company that fails to properly deal with asbestos waste."
The EPA inspected the Dial-A-Dump Eastern Creek landfill and found asbestos waste had not been covered with clean fill or soil as required.
"Asbestos waste can have significant human health effects and all precautions must be taken to ensure it is disposed of appropriately," Mr Sheehy said. ---
