Direct flights between Launceston and Adelaide take off

Peter Gutwein,Premier

Minister for Tourism

For the first time in more than 20 years, Launceston has welcomed back direct flights between Launceston and Adelaide, with Virgin Australia operating the service three times per week.

The new service reflects the focus of the Tasmanian Government's Aviation Access Strategy to encourage more direct routes with our key interstate markets – something potential travellers are actively seeking in response to COVID-19 border restrictions.

Virgin's expansion of operations into Launceston is a clear indication of the confidence the airlines continue to show in Tasmania's tourism offering and our economy's strength.

The increase in aviation capacity will provide a much-needed boost for our tourism industry during this challenging time, especially into the north and north west of the State.

In a typical year, Tasmania welcomes more than 53,000 visitors from South Australia, and with this direct connection to the north, it is now easier than ever for South Australians to explore Tasmania's unique places.

Launceston is a vibrant city and the gateway to iconic experiences, such as Cradle Mountain, the sparkling East Coast, world-class golf courses, stunning mountain biking trails at Derby and one of Australia's best wine regions.

Tourism Tasmania is supporting the new route with additional marketing activity in South Australia through its Come Down for Air campaign, designed to create strong consumer awareness and understanding of what Tasmania has to offer as a travel destination.

Virgin Australia's flights arrive and depart Launceston Airport every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with an approximate flying time of one hour and 50 minutes to Adelaide, and tickets are now on sale.
