Flooding in the Katherine Local Government Area peaked at 19.19 metres on 7 March 2026, inundating homes and businesses.
Additional disaster support announced for temporary accommodation assistance of up to $1,160 per family.
This adds to previously announced support including Immediate Relief payments and re-establishment assistance to replace essential household items.
The Albanese and Finocchiaro Governments have extended disaster assistance to support residents affected by flooding in Katherine under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Temporary accommodation assistance has now been activated for eligible flood-affected residents in the Katherine Town Council Local Government Area, with means-tested support of up to $1,160 per family available to help cover short-term accommodation costs while they are unable to return home.
This support builds on assistance announced yesterday, including Immediate Relief payments of up to $611 per adult and $309 per child, capped at $1,537 per family, to help residents experiencing personal hardship as a result of the flooding.
Re-establishment assistance of up to $8,843 per household is also available to support the replacement of essential household items such as whitegoods, furniture, bedding and basic household goods.
Current flooding in the Katherine LGA has caused severe and widespread impacts, with the Katherine River peaking at 19.19 metres on Saturday 7 March 2026.
Flood waters have led to the inundation of homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, including the evacuation and closure of Katherine Hospital and the loss of power to dozens of properties.
While floodwaters in Katherine are receding, many residents remain displaced, and recovery will take time. Emergency shelters remain open to support residents who are not yet able to return home safely.
The DRFA also supports the Northern Territory Government and local authorities to undertake counter-disaster operations and restore essential public assets, including debris removal, emergency works and infrastructure repairs.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain said the assistance measures would further recovery efforts on the ground.
"We understand that residents in Katherine are eager to commence their recovery. The additional assistance measures announced today will provide further support to those in temporary accommodation as they wait to return home," Minister McBain said.
"The situation continues to change, and floodwaters remain at major levels. We encourage everyone to stay informed by following the latest advice from emergency services and monitoring weather updates.
"Local authorities are working hard to restore critical services such as power, water, sewerage and government services back online as soon as possible. We continue to work closely with the NT Government to ensure support is provided where and when it's needed."
Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the additional temporary accommodation support would help Katherine families facing major disruption and extended displacement as floodwaters begin to recede.
"Many Katherine families have been hit hard by this flooding, with homes inundated, power lost, roads cut and essential services disrupted," Mrs Finocchiaro said.
"We know some residents will not be able to return home for some time, which is why this additional temporary accommodation support is so important.
"This assistance will help families meet the cost of somewhere safe to stay while they deal with the immediate impacts of the flooding and begin the recovery process.
"This builds on the support announced yesterday, including immediate relief payments and re-establishment assistance to replace essential household items, so families can begin to recover and get back on their feet."
