Disaster Aid Expanded for Central Australian Floods

NT Government

Disaster assistance has been extended to Barkly and Central Desert communities, including residents of Imangara (Murray Downs) and affected pastoralists, following severe flooding across Central Australia.

Eligible residents can access financial support, including immediate relief payments, temporary accommodation assistance and re-establishment grants to help replace essential household items.

Additional support is also available for primary producers and local councils, including freight subsidies and funding for clean-up operations, emergency works and infrastructure repairs.

The Albanese and Finocchiaro Governments have extended disaster assistance to support additional communities impacted by severe weather and flooding across Central Australia and the Barkly regions in February.

Under the joint Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), residents of Imangara (Murray Downs) and affected pastoralists in the Barkly and Central Desert Local Government Areas (LGAs) whose homes were impacted by flood waters during last months' event will be able to access:

Immediate Relief payments of up to $611 per adult and $309 per child, capped at $1,537 per family, to help residents experiencing personal hardship as a result of the flooding.

Temporary accommodation assistance of up to $1,160 per family available to help cover short-term accommodation costs while they are unable to return home.

Re-establishment assistance of up to $8,843 per household is also available to support the replacement of essential household items such as whitegoods, furniture, bedding and basic household goods.

Eligible primary producers in the Alice Springs, Barkly, Central Desert and MacDonnell LGAs will be able to access freight subsidies. Local authorities in these LGAs will also receive support to undertake counter-disaster operations and restore essential public assets, including debris removal, emergency works and infrastructure repairs.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain said the Albanese Government was delivering practical support to Imangara residents while continuing broader recovery efforts across the Barkly region.

"We have worked closely with the Northern Territory Government to deliver additional assistance, including immediate relief payments for residents directly impacted by flooding," Minister McBain said.

"This support strengthens recovery efforts underway and ensures individuals, families, primary producers and local councils receive the help they need during response and recovery."

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said recovery efforts remain the Government's priority following severe weather and flooding across Central Australia.

"This severe weather event has had a significant impact on communities across Central Australia, including pastoralists and cattle stations that have been heavily affected by flooding," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"We are working closely with the Australian Government to ensure affected communities receive practical support, including immediate relief payments for Imangara residents and assistance for households and primary producers impacted by flooding.

"Our priority is restoring road access, reconnecting essential services and helping families, pastoralists, cattle stations and local councils recover as quickly and safely as possible."
