From January 2026, teachers who are over 60 and are teaching part time will pay lower fees and have to do fewer hours of professional learning to meet their registration requirements with the Teacher Quality Institute (TQI).
"This is how we recognise the contribution experienced teachers can make to ACT classrooms," Minister for Education Yvette Berry said.
"While it is important that our teachers meet rigorous suitability and capability requirements in order to be registered with TQI, we also want to lower some of the barriers to our experienced teachers continuing on should they wish to after they retire from full time teaching.
"Experienced teachers have specialised expertise which they have developed over many years and drawn on to contribute to the success and wellbeing of countless students and future generations.
"They have been mentors, motivators and role models who have profoundly influenced students' lives and the teaching practice of their colleagues.
"There is a place in ACT schools for teachers who have retired from full time teaching to continue to educate Canberra's children and young people."
