Distracted Drivers targeted by Southern Traffic Operations

Two motorists have been fined for using their mobile phones while driving in Alice Springs yesterday.

Around 10:30am members of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit observed a man texting while at the Wills Terrace intersection, Northern Territory Police say

The driver was distracted and failed to notice the traffic lights had changed. He then proceeded to "bunny-hop" the vehicle through the traffic intersection until Police signalled for him to pull over.

The man was fined a total of $290, given three demerit points and issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice.

A 46-year-old woman was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice, $290 fine and three demerit points after Police found her texting while in control of a vehicle.

Around 12:10pm Police were stopped at the Parsons Street intersection when they noticed the female driver next to them texting.

The officer got out of the vehicle and approached the driver who failed to notice the officer until he knocked on the window.

Acting Sergeant Ivan Petrovic said both instances showed pure ignorance of the laws by drivers who put themselves and others at risk.

"Unfortunately some motorists believe they aren’t endangering anyone while driving distracted. The truth is, is that it takes one moment of being distracted for things to take a turn for the worse and you could end up hurting yourself or seriously injuring someone else."

"Put the phone down, or pull over, park, stop and take the call. Nothing is that important that it can’t wait," said A/Sgt Petrovic
