Drink driver arrested - Willowra

A 34-year-old man has been charged after crashing his vehicle into a police car.

Just after 8pm on Friday June 15, Police were conducting a patrol on Willowra Road when they activated their lights and indicated for an oncoming car to stop, Northern Territory Police say.

The vehicle appeared to slow down, but accelerated as it approached, veered left and collided with the Police vehicle’s bulbar before driving off.

The vehicle stopped 20 metres from the collision site and the driver was arrested.

He was transported to the Ti Tree Police station where he returned a positive blood alcohol reading of 0.182per cent.

Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly found 24 bottles of white wine and an open carton of beer.

Superintendent Jody Nobbs said police will allege the alcohol seized during the incident was bound for the dry community of Willowra, situated 300km north of Alice Springs.

"This is another great example of our Remote Police Officers doing an excellent job in intercepting grog running.

"The officers seized a considerable amount of alcohol destined for a dry community, where it would have without doubt had a negative impact," Supt Jody Nobbs said.

The man has been charged with one count each of:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle while Unlicensed
  • Drive High Range Blood Alcohol Content
  • Drive at Speed and Manner Dangerous
  • Fail to Comply Police Officers Direction

The man was issued a Notice to Appear before Ti Tree Court on July 4, 2018.
